mastheads

Here's some ideas for the masthead redesign of the Herb Companion.

I'm going to shorten the name to just Herb.

The colored bar is going to start on the back cover about an 1-2 inches from the spine and wrap over the spine to the front cover. It will end around 1-2 inches from the right side of the front cover.

I think I have decided to use a green and brown combination, although I don't know if it stands out enough.....hence the red/white combination.

I'm leaning heavily towards the first masthead....i think it looks fantastico.

wine choices

Lost Vineyards Malbec from Argentina--
Lots of type, dull typography, and totally ugs

Fuse 2006 Cabernet Savignon from Napa Valley--
With a name like "fuse" they could have done something really cool and exciting but this is kinda boring.

Stephen Vincent 2007 Crimson from California--
I'm all for simplicity and white space but this is boring.

blog assignment 4: inspiring artistic work

Mark Rothko
One of my favorite artists. His work consistently blows my mind. His use of color as emotion and scale is unparalleled.

Richard Avedon

Particularly his American West series. A truly excellent portrait photographer, he pared the image down to its one basic element, the subject. He let the subject tell their story, often times though facial expression only. He was a master at noticing and capturing so much in a split second.

Saed Meshki
Iranian designer. Does beautiful sparse, ethereal work.

blog assignment 3: Design Trends

a couple things that i have noticed....

distressed type, layouts

lots of white space

color shifts (specifically in logos)

letterpress

sustainable design
